Beyond the Brochure
We habitually succumb to the (17) .......... narratives promoted by mass media and popular opinion, seldom pausing to interrogate such representations through direct personal experience. My own initial (18) .......... of the Canary Islands exemplifies this tendency with some precision. The media's persistent depiction of the archipelago as the exclusive preserve of hedonistic tourism is, as I discovered on a recent visit, plainly (19) .......... . It is, in fact, only foreign observers who harbour this reductive and fundamentally (20) .......... view; the vast majority of local inhabitants consider themselves (21) .......... fortunate to live in what amounts to a subtropical paradise. Having now spent a substantial period there, my assessment of the archipelago has shifted (22) .......... , aligning far more closely with the perspective held by its residents. Gran Canaria, notorious in certain quarters for its boisterous coastal strip, is a case in point: while there are (23) .......... some lively nightlife zones along the shoreline, venture (24) .......... by even a few kilometres and one encounters a landscape of near-pristine natural beauty — and that is before one has even begun to explore jewels such as La Palma, arguably the most spectacular island of all.
