On the Edge: Photographers Who Defy the Limits of the Natural World
Photographers who have worked so close to active craters that the soles of their boots began to melt, come within touching (1) .......... of wild jaguars in remote rainforest, or plunged beneath Antarctic pack ice in sub-zero conditions have (2) .......... forces for a landmark exhibition, (3) .......... as a celebration of imagery from the most unforgiving corners of the planet. Polar bears and walruses were (4) .......... on camera by a photographer who spent her formative years in the high Arctic and subsequently trained as a (5) .......... biologist. She descends beneath sea ice to document her subjects at close quarters, once provoking the indignation of a leopard seal by (6) .......... the krill-laden fish it attempted to press upon her. A second contributor has documented not only wild jaguars but also communities of gorillas that had never previously encountered a human presence. Completing the trio, the crater specialists operate in heat-resistant suits, perpetually at risk of becoming so (7) .......... by the spectacle of an eruption that they stray beyond the margin of safety. Invisible concentrations of toxic gas lurk alongside open flame, all of which compound the (8) .......... hazards inherent in the pursuit of extreme photography.
