Articles and quantifiers
Level and focus
Level: B1
Category: Noun phrases
Use articles and quantity words to make the difference between general and specific reference clear.
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to: use zero article for general plural and uncountable meaning, and use the when the reference is specific.
Core idea
Compare these two meanings:
- Books are expensive. = books in general
- The books on this shelf are expensive. = specific books
The same contrast works with uncountable nouns:
- Information is easy to find online. = information in general
- The information in this email is important. = specific information
Form
zero article + plural countable noun for general meaning: Cars cause pollution.zero article + uncountable noun for general meaning: Coffee is grown in many countries.the + specific plural/uncountable noun: The coffee in this cup is cold.some/any/much/many/a few/a littleaccording to countability and meaning.
Other common zero-article uses
Use no article with many general activities and categories:
- languages: She speaks English.
- sports: They play tennis.
- meals: We had breakfast at eight.
- school subjects: History is my favourite subject.
Context matters. Use the when a particular item, group or example is identified.

- The children in this class need extra support.
- She enjoys classical music.
- The classical music we heard last night was beautiful.
- Life can be difficult in a large city.

Boundary: what this lesson does not cover
This is a B1 review and expansion. Advanced institutional uses and highly idiomatic zero-article patterns are left for higher-level work.
Quick check
Ask:
- Am I talking about things in general?
- Is the listener able to identify the exact people, things or information?
- Is the noun plural countable or uncountable?
- Do I need a quantity word instead of an article?
