Conditionals &
Mixed Conditionals
Master the most advanced conditional structures used by native speakers at the highest level.
THE BIG IDEA
Conditionals express hypothetical or real situations and their consequences. At C2 you must fluidly mix time references (past + present, present + past) and use elegant inversion structures.
MIXED CONDITIONALS
If + past perfect … would + base verb
If she had studied harder, she would be a doctor now.
She didn't study → she is not a doctor today.
If I had taken that job, I would be living in New York right now.
If + simple past / were … would have + past participle
If I were more confident, I would have spoken up in the meeting.
I am not confident → I didn't speak (past).
If he liked spicy food, he would have enjoyed the Thai dinner last night.
FORMAL INVERSION (Advanced)
Had I known about the traffic, I would have left earlier.
Were it not for her help, we would have failed.
Should you need anything, please call me immediately.
Were she to apply, she would be a strong candidate.
