Streets That Invite PausesPart 2: Open Cloze

"Streets That Invite Pauses" targets the Open Cloze (Part 2) of the Cambridge C1 Proficiency exam. Unlike Part 1, no options are provided — you must supply single words (articles, prepositions, auxiliaries, pronouns, conjunctions or discourse markers) that complete the text grammatically and logically. Scan each gap for the grammatical slot it occupies: is it linking clauses, marking reference, or completing a fixed structure? Small words carry heavy weight at C2 level.

Small changes to a street can affect how long people stay there and whom they meet. A pavement (9) .......... good repair matters, but so does the presence of places (10) .......... people can stop without feeling they are obstructing others. When seats are placed near a shopfront, they (11) .......... not have to be expensive to be useful; their value lies partly in making brief conversations possible. This is especially true (12) .......... older residents, parents and teenagers use the same route at different times. A street becomes (13) .......... shared setting rather than a corridor (14) .......... one destination to another. Designers sometimes focus on dramatic landmarks, yet everyday comfort can matter just as much. It is often the ordinary detail, (15) .......... as shade, clear signs and a reliable crossing, (16) .......... allows people to take ownership of a place.
