INTERVIEWER: Nina, people often imagine river restoration means making a river look more natural. Was that your main aim? NINA: Appearance mattered, but it wasn't the starting point. The biggest problem was flooding after heavy rain. The channel had been straightened years ago, so water moved through the town very quickly. Our first priority was slowing that water down safely, and the environmental improvements followed from the same changes. We also had to protect nearby properties during construction, so engineers modelled several storm scenarios before any work began. INTERVIEWER: What did local residents think when the project was first announced? NINA: Some were enthusiastic, but quite a few assumed we were simply going to remove trees and build concrete walls. That worried them. Once we showed detailed plans and examples from other towns, the mood changed. People were still cautious about construction noise, but most understood that the finished river would actually have more planting, not less. We held two evening sessions where residents could point to particular worries on large maps, which helped us explain the design more clearly. INTERVIEWER: Which part of the work was technically most difficult? NINA: Surprisingly, not the water itself. Moving an old footbridge caused the biggest headache. It looked simple, but underground cables passed close to its foundations, so every stage had to be planned around them. We considered leaving the bridge where it was, but then the river would have remained too narrow at that point. The bridge was eventually lifted in sections rather than moved as one piece, which reduced the risk to the services below. INTERVIEWER: You also created areas where people can sit beside the water. How did you approach that? NINA: We avoided putting benches everywhere. Some sections need to stay quiet for wildlife, so we concentrated seating near existing paths and cafés. The idea was to make the river easier to enjoy without turning the entire bank into a busy public space. That balance was more important than simply increasing the number of seats. We also chose materials that would age well outdoors, because a feature that looks attractive in year one still has to work ten years later. INTERVIEWER: Did the project produce any unexpected benefits? NINA: Yes. We knew the new planting would help insects and birds, but we didn't predict how quickly schools would start using the river for lessons. Teachers bring classes to measure water, identify plants and discuss local history. That educational use wasn't part of our original plan, but it's become one of the things I'm most pleased about. Some teachers now visit several times a year, so pupils can compare how the same place changes across different seasons. INTERVIEWER: What has been the most common criticism since the work finished? NINA: People sometimes complain that certain paths are muddy in winter. We deliberately didn't cover every route with hard paving because that would increase water runoff again. I understand the frustration, but some seasonal mud is the price of keeping more ground able to absorb rain. We are improving signs so walkers understand why those softer surfaces were chosen, because the design can otherwise look unfinished. INTERVIEWER: And what happens next? NINA: The immediate task is monitoring. We need several years of data before we can judge how well the changes work during different kinds of storms. There are ideas about extending the project upstream, but that's not the next step. First we need to learn from what we've already done. If the data is encouraging, it will give us a much stronger case for future investment elsewhere in the river system.
