SPEAKER 1 Well, I'd been sitting at a desk all day and then going home to sit on the sofa, so I knew I needed to move more. Running didn't appeal, and the pool had a quiet adults-only session on Wednesdays. I was slow at first and stopped after every few lengths, but nobody cared. What I like now is the half-hour after work when I'm just counting strokes and not looking at messages. I leave feeling as though the day has properly finished, even if I haven't swum very far. The pool is warm, which helps, and the lifeguard knows most people by name now. SPEAKER 2 I'd only been in the area for a month and didn't know anyone outside work. I saw a notice for a language exchange in the café and nearly walked past it because my Spanish is pretty basic. Actually, the regulars were lovely. They paired new people with someone patient and changed language every ten minutes, so nobody got stuck. I still make ridiculous mistakes, but people explain them without making a big thing of it. I've started meeting two of them for coffee on Saturdays as well. I've also picked up the names of a few cafés simply by asking people where they go after the session. SPEAKER 3 My cousin wanted to do a batch-cooking class but didn't fancy turning up alone, so I went with her. I thought we'd follow five strict recipes and take home identical boxes. Instead, the teacher kept saying, 'Use what you've got.' She showed us how the same sauce could work with beans, chicken or vegetables. That's what I've used most since. I don't make the exact dishes from the class, but I open the fridge on a Sunday and work something out instead of ordering food. My cousin and I still swap pictures of whatever we make, even when hers looks much better than mine. SPEAKER 4 I signed up because I'd bought an old car and didn't even know how to check the oil properly. I was tired of ringing my brother for every small question. The class was in a college workshop, but the useful bit was when the tutor came outside and looked at our own cars. He showed me where the spare tyre was hidden and noticed one light wasn't working. I changed the bulb that weekend, so the course paid for itself straight away. I'm still calling the garage for anything serious, mind you. The tutor gave us a simple printed checklist as well, so I keep it in the glove box. SPEAKER 5 A woman at work kept telling me to come to her choir. I said no for months because I hadn't sung since school and assumed there'd be an audition. In the end I went just to stop her asking. There wasn't an audition at all. We spent the first evening laughing because half of us came in at the wrong time, and the conductor simply started that bit again. I like that nobody's trying to be impressive. We have tea afterwards, and I've ended up talking to people I'd never have met otherwise. We're not performing anywhere soon, which takes the pressure off completely.
