Drawing the Coast from a Kayak
Every spring, geography teacher Owen Bell takes a group of adult volunteers along a section of the north coast in sea kayaks. They are not there simply for exercise. Their aim is to photograph cliffs, beaches and sea walls from the water so that small changes can be compared from year to year. The project began after a winter storm damaged a footpath and Owen realised that most official photographs had been taken from roads above the cliffs. From the sea, erosion patterns were easier to see. He wondered whether repeated low-cost surveys could provide useful evidence between more expensive professional studies.
Before anyone joins the survey, they attend a safety session and a short photography workshop. Owen insists that confident paddling matters more than photographic skill because conditions can change quickly. Volunteers learn to take pictures without drifting too close to rocks and to record the exact location and direction of each image. A beautiful photograph is not necessarily useful if nobody knows where it was taken. For the project, consistency is more important than artistic quality: the team tries to repeat the same views at roughly the same state of the tide each year.
The first few surveys produced thousands of photographs, which created a new difficulty. Comparing them manually took far longer than collecting them. A local software developer, Priya Shah, offered to build a simple tool that places images from different years side by side. She deliberately avoided using automatic conclusions at first. Although computer systems can identify large visual differences, a dark shadow or a temporary pile of seaweed can look like a major change. Priya wanted volunteers to learn what genuine coastal change looked like before trusting software to highlight possible areas of concern.
One discovery involved a small beach protected by a low concrete wall. Photographs showed that the beach level had gradually fallen, exposing more of the wall each year. Residents had complained that the wall itself was “sinking”, but the images suggested the opposite: the wall had stayed in place while sand had been removed by repeated storms. The local council later commissioned a formal survey, which confirmed the volunteers’ interpretation. Owen is proud of this example, though he stresses that the kayak project did not replace professional engineering work; it helped identify where such work was worth doing.
The project also attracts people for reasons Owen did not expect. Some volunteers enjoy learning about coastal science, but others value the unusual perspective of seeing familiar places from the water. Several local residents have said that the experience changed how they think about sea defences. Structures that appear permanent from a road can look surprisingly small beside a cliff or open beach. Owen believes this emotional response matters because people are more likely to discuss difficult decisions about erosion when they have personally seen how exposed the coastline can be.
The team now shares its photographs through an online map. Owen hopes other communities will copy the method, but he warns against turning it into a competition to collect the largest number of images. The strength of the project lies in returning to the same places in the same way. Ten carefully repeated photographs can reveal more than hundreds of random ones. Next year the volunteers plan to add short notes about weather and wave conditions, not because Owen wants to create a complex scientific database, but because a little extra context may make the pictures more useful in the future.
The annual trips are deliberately limited to manageable groups. Owen says a smaller team is easier to supervise on the water and more likely to record each location carefully rather than treating the day as a race along the coast.
