A secondary school installed a small weather station on its roof after science teachers noticed that students often treated weather data as something produced elsewhere. The equipment recorded temperature, rainfall, wind and air pressure every few minutes. At first, the project was used mainly in science lessons.

Teachers saved unusual readings and maintenance notes so students could distinguish genuine weather changes from possible equipment problems. 40They had to decide which changes were worth mentioning and how to explain uncertainty when conditions varied during the day. One class compared readings from shaded and sunny locations to understand why official temperature measurements follow strict rules. Older students have used several months of data for statistics projects involving correlation and seasonal variation. Maintenance also became part of the learning. Leaves occasionally blocked the rain gauge, and strong winds once moved a sensor slightly out of position.
41Instead of treating these events only as technical failures, teachers used them to show why reliable data depends on checking instruments as well as reading results. The website summaries attracted comments from parents who had never previously paid much attention to school science projects. The project has also encouraged teachers to discuss how graphs can look convincing even when the underlying measurements are weak. The school now shares its measurements with a local gardening group, which is especially interested in rainfall and overnight temperature.
