Learning to read a city sky
From the roof of the Halden Community Centre, the city sky looked almost empty. Streetlights coloured the lower air orange, apartment windows broke the darkness into rectangles, and aircraft crossed the south at regular intervals. Astronomer Leila Armand had invited twelve residents to spend six months recording what could still be seen. Most expected lessons in identifying stars.
41Armand began with darkness itself. Participants used simple meters to measure brightness at the same points each week, but the numbers varied with cloud, humidity and wet pavement. A cloudy night could appear brighter than a clear one because light reflected back from the sky.
42The group therefore kept written descriptions alongside measurements. They noted whether nearby shops were open, whether trees had leaves and which direction each observer faced. These details initially seemed less scientific than the meter reading, yet they explained why identical numbers could correspond to very different viewing conditions.
43As winter progressed, participants learned to recognise a few bright stars and planets. More importantly, they began noticing changes on the ground. One shop replaced an exposed lamp with a shielded fitting; a sports court remained illuminated for hours after use; a new advertisement produced a narrow band of glare visible only from one street.
44The group presented these observations to the council, avoiding the claim that the city should become completely dark. Lighting supported safety, evening work and social life. Their proposal concerned direction, timing and contrast: light should reach the place it was intended to serve and should not be brighter than the surrounding task required.
45A trial around the community centre adjusted several fittings and introduced timers. The numerical reduction in sky brightness was modest, disappointing those who had expected the Milky Way to appear. Yet residents reported that the roof became easier to use because glare no longer erased faint stars near the horizon.
46By the final meeting, the group could name more objects in the sky, but identification was no longer the project’s main achievement. Participants had learned to read darkness as a relationship among weather, surfaces, technology and attention. The city had not ceased to interfere with the sky; it had become possible to describe the interference precisely enough to change some of it. The project also changed how participants described a failed observing night. Instead of writing “nothing visible”, they recorded cloud thickness, glare direction and which bright objects remained detectable. Absence became a structured observation rather than a blank that implied no work had occurred. Because observers rotated positions on the roof, they also discovered that a supposedly objective improvement could benefit one sightline while leaving another dominated by glare, which made the final recommendations spatial rather than simply numerical.
