Why a map is not a miniature world
When a city replaced its familiar transit diagram, commuters objected before most had tried the new version. The lines were geographically more accurate, station names were larger and transfers were marked with greater precision, yet online complaints insisted that the old map had been easier to trust.
41No useful map is a neutral reduction of the world: it enlarges some features, suppresses others and converts continuous space into categories. A walking map may ignore traffic volume, whereas a road atlas may omit the gradient that matters to a cyclist; such absences are not necessarily flaws. Indeed, a map becomes usable partly by refusing to display everything at once.
42The ethical weight of selection becomes clearer in emergency planning. An evacuation diagram that shows an official route but not a locked gate is not merely incomplete in an abstract sense. Its omissions distribute risk. The same applies, less dramatically, when a neighbourhood map presents a district as empty because informal paths and meeting places were never entered into the database. Digital maps complicate the issue because they do not offer every user the same surface: a search for lunch, a wheelchair-accessible entrance or the quickest journey produces different versions of the same streets. The system appears responsive rather than selective, and that responsiveness is genuinely useful.
43A group of hikers recently followed an app that rerouted them around a reported landslip, but the alternative path ended at a bridge that had been closed for months. Their mistake was not that they trusted a screen instead of paper, since a printed guide could also have been outdated. The problem was that the app offered a confident instruction without making the age or source of its information visible.
44Traditional cartography developed conspicuous ways of announcing convention: legends, scales, contour intervals and projections. These devices did not eliminate distortion. They reminded the reader that the marks on the page followed a system and that the system could be examined.
45A better digital map would not attempt to drown uncertainty in additional detail. It might show when a route was last confirmed, distinguish official access from frequently used access, or reveal that two datasets disagree. Such friction can seem inconvenient, especially in a product designed to deliver an immediate answer. But a moment of hesitation may be more useful than effortless confidence.
46The aim, then, is not to make everyone a cartographer. It is to preserve the possibility of informed doubt. A map should help us act while leaving enough of its construction visible for us to recognise that another map, designed for another purpose, might organise the same ground differently.
