A route that existed only conditionally
At the northern edge of the salt marsh, ornithologist Eva Markham watched a flock of redshanks lift before anyone in the survey team had moved. Their departure appeared to confirm the route drawn on the project map: birds feeding on the outer mudflats, then crossing the sea wall to roost inland as the tide rose. Eva was less certain. A route line joins two observations efficiently, but it can conceal the decisions, interruptions and alternative destinations between them.
37The study combined lightweight tags, visual counts and reports from farmers. Tags produced precise points every few minutes, creating paths that seemed far more authoritative than older observations. Yet several birds disappeared from the map when signals were blocked by terrain or when batteries failed. Their missing points were usually connected by the shortest plausible line.
38Eva compared those interpolated lines with dawn observations. Some birds did cross the sea wall directly; others followed drainage channels, paused in flooded fields or joined flocks travelling towards a different roost. The direct line was not always wrong, but it transformed unobserved time into uninterrupted intention.
39Farmers complicated the account further. They reported birds gathering after particular grazing patterns or water releases, but their descriptions used field names absent from official maps. One “Long Meadow” referred to two adjacent parcels depending on the speaker’s family. The team initially treated the reports as imprecise.
40When the local names were added to the database, several apparently conflicting sightings aligned. More importantly, the names encoded practical differences: a field’s drainage, ownership and usual time of access. The birds were responding to conditions that the official parcel numbers recorded poorly.
41A proposed new footpath made the route question urgent. Planners wanted a corridor that avoided the mapped flight lines. Eva argued that the lines represented different levels of certainty and different kinds of movement. A bird passing high above a path posed a different disturbance question from a flock feeding beside it, while a gap in tag data could not safely be treated as empty space.
42The team conducted disturbance trials at varying distances and times. In some fields, birds returned quickly after walkers passed; in others, repeated low-level disturbance shifted feeding towards poorer ground. Weather and flock size altered the response, and the effect of one interruption depended on what alternative habitat remained available that day.
43The final plan moved part of the path, introduced seasonal closures elsewhere and retained monitoring at several uncertain crossings. It did not preserve a single migration corridor because the birds had not been using one. The project replaced a clean route with a conditional account of movement, evidence and choice—less memorable on a map, but less likely to turn missing observations into confident geography. The tags also altered what counted as a route endpoint. A cluster of fixes could represent feeding, shelter from wind or simply a period when the bird remained visible to the receiver. Eva asked the team to annotate behaviour where direct observation existed and to avoid assigning purpose elsewhere. Without that separation, a precise path would acquire a sequence of motives generated by the analyst, making later habitat decisions appear to follow the bird’s choices rather than assumptions about them. The research team also examined how the act of protecting a route might stabilise it. Seasonal closures could make one field quieter, encouraging repeated use and later producing data that appeared to validate the original boundary. This feedback was not an argument against protection, but it meant subsequent maps had to distinguish observed preference from preference partly created by management. Without that distinction, successful intervention would harden a provisional route into an apparently natural corridor and reduce attention to alternatives needed under different weather or land use.
