A community mapping project
Few people would claim that a printed street map is useless, but it can become out of date remarkably quickly. In one district, residents began adding details about ramps, drinking fountains and quiet routes to an online map. The aim was not to replace official information. They also wanted the map to reflect obstacles that people with different mobility needs might encounter, while still making it easier for people to find out (9) .......... a route would suit their needs. Contributors can add a note (10) .......... soon as they notice a change, and each suggestion is checked by another volunteer before it appears online. This has made the map more reliable than it would be (11) .......... every entry were accepted automatically. The project has also shown (12) .......... useful local knowledge can be. One resident, for example, pointed out a path that was shorter (13) .......... the main road but impossible to use after heavy rain. The group now includes seasonal advice, (14) .......... well as practical directions. Although the map is maintained by volunteers, the local council has agreed to link (15) .......... it from its own website. The organisers hope this will encourage other neighbourhoods to create tools of (16) .......... own, rather than waiting for a single organisation to solve every small problem.
