Rooftop food-growing project
The gardens are managed by small groups, each of (9) .......... is responsible for a different roof. New members receive a short safety briefing before they are given a key. They are also shown how to use water carefully, (10) .......... the roofs are exposed to strong sun and wind. The project has produced more vegetables (11) .......... the organisers expected. Some of the surplus is used in the shared kitchen, (12) .......... the rest is taken home by residents. The association has avoided setting strict rules about what people should grow, (13) .......... it does ask everyone to record which plants have worked well. There is a waiting list for plots, (14) .......... means that the organisers are considering adding more containers. (15) .......... they do so, they will need to check that the roofs can support the extra weight. The next meeting will decide (16) .......... the project should include a small greenhouse. Each group keeps a notebook describing what has been planted and how often it has been watered. The notes help new gardeners avoid repeating mistakes and give the association a clearer picture of which roofs need extra support. The association checks the notebooks at the end of each season and shares the most useful observations with all groups. This makes it easier for new gardeners to begin with realistic expectations.
