Designing safer crossings
Traffic engineers became increasingly (17) .......... about a junction near a school after several parents reported close calls. Before proposing changes, the team observed the junction from several positions and spoke to people who used it daily. Their findings showed that drivers and pedestrians were often responding to the same unclear signals. At busy times, cars waited near the school gate, and this made the route hard for children to read. A (18) .......... number of children were crossing between parked cars, partly because the official crossing was difficult to see from one side of the road. The situation looked (19) .......... at first glance, but observations made at the busiest time of day revealed a different picture. Improving the (20) .......... of the crossing was therefore the first priority. Some changes, such as brighter markings, were immediately (21) ..........; others involved making the route more (22) .......... for people approaching from different directions. The team also held a consultation with local (23) .........., who suggested a bench and a sheltered waiting area. The resulting design was praised for its (24) ..........: it solved several problems without making the street feel cluttered.
