Community sound archive
The archive does not treat any recording as a final account of an event. Instead, each file is stored together with a note explaining when it was made and (9) .......... what circumstances. Volunteers are asked to listen again before publishing a clip, partly (10) .......... make sure that private details have not been included by mistake. The team has also learned that silence can be as informative (11) .......... speech. One resident, for example, described a square that used to be busy late into the evening but is now quiet (12) .......... most nights. Such observations are not used to prove that one version of the past is better (13) .......... another. They simply show how differently the same place may be experienced. New contributors can choose (14) .......... their names appear beside a recording. The editors have found that this option matters, (15) .......... it allows people to speak openly without being made more visible than they wish. (16) .......... the archive has limited funding, it has continued to attract trained volunteers. Editors also compare the description supplied by a contributor with the recording itself. When a title could mislead a listener, it is changed before publication and the earlier wording is retained only in the project’s internal record.
