The daily rhythm of city traffic

I'm a planner and I study urban traffic rhythms, or traffic cycles as they are called. Everything in our city is rhythmic; we used to think that there was just one timetable at the centre controlling these patterns, (9) ________ we now clearly know that we have timetables in almost (10) ________ district in our city. We are trying to understand how they connect with one another and the way they are affected by travel cues (11) ________ school or office times. Planners study these patterns (12) ________ we can help commuters, for example, to adjust to new bus routes and also help those (13) ________ traffic patterns are out of balance. What currently interests me is the link between the timing of our traffic lights and energy use. We know, for example, that long-term roadworks often force drivers onto longer routes during rush hour and this can lead (14) ________ serious delays. Why (15) ________ is the case requires a lot more research. My colleagues and I are working (16) ________ mapping this link at the moment.
