The advantages of student-led debate
I, like all teachers, had heard about the beneficial effects of student debate for learners. But it wasn't something I gave much thought to; I engaged with it when required to do so but without much understanding or (17) ________. However, moving recently into a (18) ________ new college, where student debate is given much greater emphasis, has changed my (19) ________ entirely. Often, students who participate less within the (20) ________ of formal lessons flourish during open debates, where they feel more confident. This (21) ________ discussion and reflection to take place in new ways. Student debate also gives them opportunities to express opinions spontaneously rather than always as a (22) ________ to the tutor's questions. Through student debate I see my students in a different light. Students' behaviour can shift, and differences between classmates that may have been apparent during normal lessons might not be so obvious. If other tutors are, as I was, a little (23) ________ at first, then I would urge them to throw themselves into student debate! It will be a (24) ________ rewarding experience!
