Cookbooks of the year

The best food books of this year fall into three main categories: purely instructional, historical, and what, for (1) ________ of a better term, I’ll call “anecdotal”. Between these broad categories, however, the boundaries are (2) ________. One problem with putting food writers into genres is that they are (3) ________ to be pigeon-holed. Many of them see their role as a (4) ________ of the practical and the creative. Some (5) ________ to be more like novelists, (6) ________ some of the elements of literary writing. Others regard themselves as historians, exploring the habits and dishes of earlier generations. At the end of the day, what (7) ________ is how readable or useful the recipe is, and in many cases, how well it is presented. However, it is quite clear that cooking and books were (8) ________ for each other.
