How to ace Open Cloze

What does C2 Proficiency Part 2 test?

C2 Proficiency Part 2 tests grammar and cohesion through one-word gaps. Most answers are function words such as articles, prepositions, pronouns, auxiliaries, linkers or particles, so strong candidates read the whole sentence and paragraph before choosing the missing word.

The Open Cloze section tests structural knowledge of English. Most gaps are grammatical or function words (articles, prepositions, pronouns, auxiliaries).

Pay attention to negative words (like "hardly" or "neither"), phrasal verb particles, and fixed prepositional phrases. Read the full sentence before filling the gap.

Key focus areas

  • Articles and quantifiers
  • Relative pronouns
  • Fixed prepositional phrases
